Protest at Indiana University
BLOOMINTON, IN - Indiana University students protested the war in Ukraine on Wednesday March 3, 2022 at the Sample Gates on campus.

Students gathered at the Sample Gates to show their support for Ukraine during the war that is currently happening. Even in Bloomington Indiana people have felt directly impacted by this war.
Indiana University students Maddie Berkley and Devora Chincholker each had their own ways in which they were individually impacted by this war.
Berkley said a former dance teacher was Ukrainian and has family there now. And for Chincholker it is also a very worrisome ordeal. “I have friends in Ukraine, I’ve been to Ukraine. I have a friend who has an orphanage in Ukraine. They literally weren’t able to get out, they’re hiding out, all of the kids and her own family.” she said.

With the threats of war growing, people everywhere are doing whatever they can to show support for Ukraine. Indiana University East student Victoria Dershem came to Bloomington for the day to join the protest and show her support. “It’s just important to me to get out here and spread the word.” Dershem said.
This war has been a bit of a wakeup call for people everywhere. As Berkley put it “You don’t realize the stuff on the news how it impacts your life.” But it is the little signs of support that are touching in many ways. Chincholker said that she is really proud of the IU community during this time for showing their support in many ways.

The shocking thing to many students has been how impactful this has been on themselves specifically and how terrifying it has been for everyone around the world. “The whole world is falling apart and it’s really hard to watch,” said Dershem. But many students feel obligated to do their part to show support for the people of Ukraine. “I have to take a stand, I have to do something,” said Berkely. It is at times like this that show the true support of the students and faculty at Indiana University.

As said by Indiana University student Devora Chincholker “Whoever stands by Ukraine right now, it shows that they will stand with the good people in any situation.”
